Overview
Quiet relaxation is guaranteed at Casa de Almagreira.
Almagreira’s owner Camilo spent his childhood summers in this quiet corner of the Azores – an escape from the trappings of modern life in the 1980s. 2008 saw him fulfil a thirty-year dream when he purchased the estate, and like the best Azorean rural properties Almagreira strikes a comfortable balance between elegance and cosiness.
The best of the original elements of building are carefully preserved, whilst the modern essentials, such as the kitchen and bathroom, have been sympathetically updated to a high contemporary standard. Camilo has also utilised the artistry of Santa Maria’s renown craftsmen and women, most notably with the linen and handwoven fabrics for which the island is famous.
Inside, there’s a well-equipped galley kitchen, multiple living and dining areas, and four comfortable bedrooms – three doubles and one twin. Outside, there’s a sun terrace, alfresco dining area and the obligatory Azorean BBQ, with the beautiful rolling hills of Pico Alto as a backdrop. We recommend including a hire car and it’s never a chore exploring this peaceful rural island – the capital Vila do Porto, Praia Formosa beach, and the striking east coast villages of Maia and Sao Lourenco are all a short drive away.
