Overview
Canyoning and coasteering are fast becoming the most-popular outdoor pursuits across the Azores.
If you’re new to Canyoning, here’s how it works: you’ll follow a mountain stream through a narrow forest gulley as it winds its way to the valley floor, scrambling through the undergrowth, abseiling down waterfalls and leaping into hidden pools.
The Ribeira dos Caldeiroes Natural Park is the picturesque setting for Sao Miguel’s most-popular canyoning routes, hidden amongst the laurisilva forests on the flanks of the Serra da Tronqueira mountains. Sao Jorge’s has the more challenging routes, thanks to its imposing sea cliffs, whilst secluded Flores offers the greatest diversity of routes for both beginners and experts.
Coasteering is similar-but-different – more a mix of scrambling, bouldering and wild swimming, for which the characteristically rocky and volcanic coastlines of the Azores are ideal. The south coasts of Sao Miguel and Terceira are excellent coasteering spots.
Both canyoning and coasteering are very inclusive activities, but a good level of fitness and co-ordination are recommended, and you must be a confident swimmer. Safety is paramount and our qualified guides will be with you every step of the way.
