The Azores are nine unique islands which lie 1500km off the coast of mainland Europe. Their unspoilt landscapes form the most-westerly outpost of Europe, and their secluded location has been a draw for intrepid travellers since the 15th century. They’re very much a part of Portugal – in their language, their architecture and their cuisine – but the Atlantic Ocean has always loomed-large in the Azorean psyche, and there’s a distinct island culture that’s evolved since the first settlers arrived over 400 years ago.
In celebration of the islands, we embarked on our Azores on Film project: to create a series of short films showcasing the cinematic beauty of the archipelago, and unique character of the Azorean people.
