Overview
Explore the third island on two wheels on our Self-Guided Terceira Cycling Holiday.
The island of Terceira has arguably the most-interesting, most-protected landscapes in the Azores. On the surface, the island looks tamed, with its rolling pastures and patchwork farms and fields. Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover overlapping lava flows, volcanic fumaroles and shifting tectonic fissures.
Your rides take you deep into the heart of the island, criss-crossing the Reserva Florestal Natural where the laurisilva forests which once covered Terceira are preserved and protected. To the east, the benign farmlands of the Serra do Cume and the Achada valley hide the remnants a vast caldera which formed the island almost 300,000 years ago. Two of the Azores’ most famous volcanic landmarks are also here: the Gruta da Natal ‘Christmas caves’ and the fascinating, famous lava tunnels at Algar do Carvao.
Your home for the week is the Pousada Forte in the historic capital Angra de Heroismo – the city’s restaurants and café bars serve some of the best, hearty Azorean cuisine. We’ll supply you with your bikes and the online maps you’ll need to navigate, and resident guide Tiago is on-hand for any mechanical support you might need. You’ll also have time off from cycling, and you can personalise your holiday with a whale and dolphin watching trip or a sea kayaking session.
