Overview

Azorean culture meets Azorean adventure on our Terceira Family Holiday.

Perhaps more than any other island, the ‘third’ island of Terceira has a knack for preserving and celebrating Azorean island culture. Much of its UNESCO-protected architecture hails from a time when the Azores were at the centre of Portugal’s vast maritime empire. This ‘golden age’ is also reflected in the island’s cuisine, and you’ll often find Terceirans favour herbs and spices which don’t appear in recipes on the other islands.

Our Terceira Family Holiday is a great introduction to the Azores and will show you the best the island has to offer. Your week includes a whale and dolphin watching from Angra marina, a chance to kayak in the calm waters of Praia da Vitoria bay, and you’ll explore the island’s extraordinary volcanic landmarks on foot and by bike. Our resident guides Tiago and Isabel are proud of their island home, and they’ll give you a fascinating insight into the landscapes, plants, animals, and history of Terceira.

Your home for the week is a lava stone cottage at Pico da Vigia on the rural south coast. It’s a lovely, family friendly spot, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the neighbouring island of Sao Jorge. We’ll include a hire car during your stay and the bustling capital Angra de Heroismo is just a short drive away – and if you’d prefer a hotel stay in Angra or if you’d like a holiday from driving, it’s easy for us to personalise your holiday.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a flight to Terceira, via Lisbon. You’ll be met on arrival by Bruno, the owner of Pico da Vigia. Once you’ve collected your hire car, you’ll follow Bruno to your accommodation. A traditional Alcatra slow-cooked beef stew will be waiting in your cottage’s wood-burning oven when you arrive - you’ll also have a well-stocked fridge with everything you’ll need for breakfast.
We’ll leave your first full day on Terceira free, so you can explore historic Angra de Herosimo. Angra's also a good spot to shop for any supplies you might need during your stay - there's an excellent selection of shops selling local, seasonal produce.
You'll explore the rural interior of the island by bike with our resident guide. Inland, Terceira is a mish-mash of repeated, overlapping volcanic eruptions, whose lava flows will lead you to Biscoitos on the north coast: one of the best swimming spots on the island.
You’ll return to Angra for a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip. The seas around the Azores are one of the best places to observe cetaceans and ocean wildlife, and you’ll return to sea after lunch for a visit to the protected Ilheus das Cabras islands; part of the Parque Natural da Terceira.
You’ll spend a second day with our guide exploring the volcanic site at Furnas do Enxofre on foot, followed by a visit to the lava caves at Algar do Carvao: one of the Azores' most-impressive natural landmarks.
Today’s free – you might like to walk to the summit of Monte Brasil, the extinct volcano overlooking Angra Bay, followed by lunch by the beach in Praia da Vitoria. You could end the day with a visit to the famous viewpoint at Serra do Cume overlooking the patchwork Achada valley.
You'll spend a final morning with our guide, sea kayaking in Praia da Vitoria bay – the calm waters of the sheltered bay are the perfect spot for beginners and younger children to get to grips with kayaking.
You'll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
